The damage caused by COPD is irreversible, therefore treatment focuses on disease management. The most important interventions are smoking cessation, pulmonary rehabilitation and the prevention of infection and exacerbations. It is important to remember that each patient is an individual and what works for one might not work for another.

All COPD patients should be offered a pneumococcal vaccination and an annual influenza vaccination.
